When Patrick Jane is arrested and in prison, he tries to prove that the man he killed was Red John. Lisbon is under suspension, and the rest of the team has been reassigned. When Jane is reinstated as a CBI consultant, she gets her new team to fight together in order to have her old team back. The CBI team and Jane are assigned a kidnap case, where the victim is the son of an old psychic client of Jane. When Jane notices a man carrying a gun at a rally, she commits herself to proving that he is a psychopath at the brink of killing someone. At the same rally, Lisbon investigates the death of a photographer. Rigsby is worried that his relationship with a public defender will create moments of awkwardness between Van Pelt and him. When the body of a woman washes up on an island off the coast of California, it is up to the CBI team to investigate.

During a search for a serial killer, Jane encounters a blogger who has committed his life to finding the killer. The CBI team travels to a resort town in search of the murderer of a police chief and Lisbon crosses paths with Tommy, her brother, who is also a bounty hunter in search of a bail jumper. An undercover narcotics cop is killed, and Jane together with the CBI team have to retrace her investigations in order to find the killer. Harrigan and Rigsby take their relationship to the next level. When Jane drowns during an investigation of the murder of a fireman, he loses his memory and turns back into the old conman, Patrick Jane. Jane and the CBI team take on a case involving the murder of a divorce attorney.
