‘The Mentalist’ Thrives on Conflict
The Mentalist, the People’s Choice Award winning CBS series goes to Season 2 and delves deeper into the unusual relationship between the California Bureau of Investigations team members and the independent contractor, Patrick Jane, played by Simon Baker, who helps them solve difficult cases. Last season ended with Jane saving the life of Agent Libson, played by Robin Tunney. Season 2 picked up where Season 1 ended with Minelli and Libson disagreeing about how to proceed with the Red John case. Minelli insisted on giving the case to Sam Bosco, but Libson disagreed. Jane was not pleased to learn that Libson had been taken off the case, and threatened to quit.
Patrick Jane offers to help Sam Bosco in exchange for information about the Red John case, but Bosco rejected Jane’s offer. Bosco and Jane’s relationship becomes even more tense when Bosco catches Jane in the act of trying to change Bosco’s computer access code to search for information. It becomes clear that Jane has intention of letting go of the Red John case. We can see that Jane is headed for trouble as the tension with Bosco brews.
The supporting cast of characters keeps us entertained and adds depth to the series. Flirting and fun balances the often tense story lines and relationships. Patrick Jane’s problem solving skills are fantastic, even if a bit hard to swallow at times. Simon Baker’s portrayal of Jane is the heart of The Mentalist. Baker’s character Patrick Jane is annoying, but very likeable, and it will be interesting to see how he continues to handle being shut out of the Red John case.
Will we learn that Agent Lisbon and Sam Bosco have a past? We will just have to wait and see as Season 2 develops.
